Weight throw records fall at Chadron State meet

It was snowy and cold outside in Chadron on Saturday, but it was warm and cozy inside the Nelson Physical Activity Center at Chadron State College where the annual Don Holst Open Track and Field Meet took place with athletes from three visiting teams joining the Eagles in the spirited competition.

Chadron State Coach Seth Mischke said everything went smoothly and there were numerous excellent marks posted for this time of the season.

"I'm sure quite a few of the athletes will move up on both the conference and the national lists," Mischke said.  "There were lots of good showings today."

Two meet records were set by Chadron State's standout weight throwers Kyla Sawvell and Daniel Reynolds.

Senior Kyla Sawvell had a personal best mark of 20.10 meters, or 65 feet, 11 ½ inches, to break the meet record of 63 feet, 3 inches set by Chadron State's five-time All-American thrower Mel Herl in 2019, two years after she'd graduated but returned to compete again. Saturday's mark also was a personal best for Sawvell, exceeding by more than two feet her throw of 63-9 ¾  that took first at the Myrle Hanson Open Meet at Black Hills State two weeks ago.

Reynolds hurled the weight 20.42 meters, or 67 feet even, to break the Holst Meet record of 61-1 ¾ set by Jack Root of Colorado Mines in 2019. It was just 3 ½ inches shy of Reynolds' all-time best, which is the

Chadron State record that he set at the Black Hills Holiday Open Meet on Dec. 3, 2022.
Both Sawvell and Reynolds also won the shot put competitions Saturday.  Sawvell's winning mark measured 47-4 ½, and Reynolds hit 52-1 ¾.
The meet produced two more double winners. Chadron State's Carlie Collier won the 60 and 200 meters and Kendall Lynn of Montana State-Billings swept the long and triple jumps. Both of them along with Sawvell also won those same events at last year's Holst Meet.  Reynolds also was the weight throw winner a year ago, but he settled for third behind two teammates in the shot put competition last January.
Chadron State women won eight events and the Eagles' men won nine Saturday.

Other first place finishers for the Lady Eagles were Caydince Groth, 400; Alissa Wieman, mile; Jourdaine Cerenil, high jump, and the 4x400 relay team made up of Cassie Wulff, Kassyl Swinney, Danae Rader and Groth.

The winners for the CSC men besides Reynolds were Osvaldo Cano, 60; Greg Logsdon, 400; Charles Fossey, 3000; Logan Peila, high hurdles; Emory Yoosook, long jump; Hector Otega, high jump; and the 4x400 relay team comprised of Cano, his twin Osiel, Logsdon and Peila.

Fossey, a freshman from Rock Springs, Wyo., ran the 3000 in 8:37.47, just 26 hundreds of a second over the meet record.

Besides the victories by Lynn in the long and triple jumps, Montana State-Billings got firsts in the women's competition from Kailee Stoppel in the 800 and Tatum Hull in the 60 hurdles.  Two Yellowjackets' men also won events. Ase Ackerman was the mile winner for the second year in a row and Garrett McMillen captured the triple jump.

Katie Turpin won the 3000 for the Black Hills State women while Mason Sartain took the 200 meters and Braden Anderson was first in the 800 for BHSU men.

South Dakota Mines pole vaulters swept that event.  Kamryn Scully was the women's winner Garrett Meier won the men's vault.
